Me and Wes
The one thing me and Wes actually argue about 👀
It is not golf. And it is not close to being settled.
Hey y’all,
This week it is just me and Wes. What we actually compete for, the pettiest stuff we have fallen out over, and who wins if we go tomorrow.
Fair warning. One of the answers has nothing to do with golf.
George
01The stakes

Nobody is paying anybody
The first thing everybody asks, and the answer is duller than you want it to be.
Honestly? We do not play for anything. Me and Wes just play and compete for pride.

I am not a big gambler. I do not like playing for money any more, and I have not for a long time.

Pride is the whole currency. It turns out that is plenty.
02My game

The one bit of my game he would take off me
Ask Wesley what he would have of mine and he does not have to think about it.
Consistency off the tee. No question. That is the one he would take off me, and he would not need a second to answer it.

Everywhere else I am not sure he would swap. Putter, irons, he is in a good place. It is the driver that is misbehaving at the minute, and we will come back to that.
03The petty stuff

You name it, we have argued about it
There is no single pettiest one. That is sort of the point.
There is nothing too petty and nothing too big. We argue for the sake of arguing half the time.

And if I am getting beaten, or I am down in a match, he can make me lose my marbles over the smallest thing. He gets under my skin very easily. He always has.

You name it, we have argued about it.
04The real argument

It is not golf. It is the grill.
The one thing neither of us will ever concede.
Here is the thing about me and Wes and golf. We know each other’s strengths and weaknesses and we are completely open about them. Anything he is better at, I would tell him to his face.

So the only thing left is the kitchen. I think I am the better cook. And I am fairly sure he thinks he is the better cook.

Grill master, whatever you want to call it. Neither of us is backing down on that one. That is the one we are both determined to win.

The head to head
I am taking myself
18 holes at Solina tomorrow, bragging rights for the year. Two weeks ago I would have given you the opposite answer.
Right now, today, I am taking myself.

I have been playing Solina well. And with what I have seen off the tee from him lately, I think even my bad day out there beats his bad day off the tee.

His putter is great. His irons are great. Everything is great. He is just experimenting with drivers at the minute and it is a fraction off. If he hits one bad one early, it might rattle him.

Two weeks ago you would have got the opposite. Two weeks ago I would have told you there is no chance I beat Wesley, that he is unbeatable.
That is just how it goes with our games.
Pelli on depth in the backswing.
Pelli’s tip of the week
Get shallow 👀
This week it is Owen, and a backswing with no depth in it.
Owen gets steep in transition, which is when the club goes vertical in the first third of the downswing. But that is the symptom. The cause is that he has no depth.

Depth is how far your arms travel back and around you going back. Owen’s go straight up. What goes straight up comes straight back down, and the shaft stands up.

The drill is an alignment stick. Put it in the ground just outside your trail foot, about four inches off the target line, leaning so the top of it sits by your shoulder. Shuffle forward, put a ball down and make your turn. If you lift, you hit the stick.

One warning from Pelli. Do not cheat it by dragging your arms behind you. The depth comes from the pivot.
💬You replied

Your swing thoughts are far weirder than mine
I asked for the strange ones. You delivered.

“Duzzn Matta.”
Picked it up from the Kiwis. He saves it for tee shots where a lost ball is in play. It does not matter, so just swing and take what the course gives you.
Tim

“Hot dog… POWER.”
He inherited “cheeeeeese, pizza” from an old boy at his local, then rewrote it around the hotdogs at his course. Backswing, follow through, done.
Ryan

“The ball is flat.”
He got it off the Marooch and freely admits he has no idea what it means. It squares him up anyway.
Mike

“OK. Let’s show ’em.”
Everything before that is noise. “I wonder if that is an aeroplane or a helicopter I am hearing. I wonder where we are eating when this nightmare is over.”
T Wayne

Keep them coming. There are more of these going in.

That is me and Wes.
Pride and not money, a driver he would steal off me, arguments about absolutely nothing, and a cook off neither of us will ever concede.
George
P.S. 👀 Settle it for us. Me or Wes on the grill? Hit reply with a name. I will be passing the results on to him, especially if I win.
